Congregation’s Perception of the Effects of Lighting Design Towards the Formation of Holy Mass Atmosphere (Study Case: St. Laurentius Catholic Church, Bandung)

Bachelor's Thesis

Light becomes important in designs, especially those of places of worship. This can be seen in Catholic churches, where light is an important element in Catholic liturgy. St. Laurentius Catholic Church, is an example of an architecturally modern church with both natural and artificial lighting strategies implemented to form the atmosphere. This object then allows us to evaluate how the atmosphere is formed by both light sources in detail according to incumbent principles.
This research uses a descriptive method and both quantitative and qualitative approaches towards the observation. Both types of data are then analyzed using literature studies related to the strategies of creating a mass atmosphere through lighting.
Analysis shows that the church’s atmosphere in general leans toward visuals that tend to signify certain ideal perceptions that agree with the definition the second Vatican Council documents has laid out. Despite this, there are certain characteristics that fail to show up entirely, such as visual clarity, glare, perceptions of color, perceptions of openness, and perceptions of formality. There is a superiority in the atmosphere provided by the afternoon Mass compared to the one provided by the evening Mass. This means there is room for improvement to better the night Mass’ atmosphere.
