Lighting Techniques Forming the Sacred Expression of Sanctuary in St. Laurent Catholic Church, Bandung

Different interpretations regarding documents issued by The Second Vatican Council are assumed as factors that affect a wide variety of appearances and manifestations of sacred expression of contemporary Catholic churches. This study focuses on sacred expression of Sanctuary, by considering that Sanctuary as the most important space in a Catholic church could be regarded as representing the image of the whole church itself. As one of the contemporary churches, St. Laurent Catholic Church in Bandung applies various techniques of artificial lighting in its spaces. This qualitative study addresses how and to what extent techniques of artificial lighting could support sacred expression of Sanctuary of contemporary Catholic Church. Collected data encompass quantitative data, which include working drawings, measurement of illuminance and brightness and qualitative data, which consist of visual notes and recordings. The process of analysis consists of analysis of sacred architecture, which entails orientation, hierarchy, balance and symbol, and visual analysis, which comprises visual clarity, visual uniformity, visual balance, brightness and spatial intimacy. It is identified that artificial lighting techniques have a significant role in forming sacred expression of Sanctuary of St. Laurent Catholic Church in Bandung.
